Our Story
Jessica Louise and Derek Smith first crossed paths while working on a film at the Yellowstone Film Ranch in Paradise Valley, Montana. Both came from strong backgrounds in production sewing and design, bringing a wealth of experience and creative expertise to the set.
Jessica Louise has been designing and sewing for her own brand since 2004, building a reputation through freelance work with celebrity clients, as well as contributing to television and film productions. Derek Smith, a Montana native, grew up immersed in the outdoors—skiing, snowboarding, and climbing. His passion led him to create two brands focused on outdoor wear and pattern making.
Their shared passion for design and craftsmanship quickly blossomed into a deep friendship, which later evolved into collaborative projects, love, marriage, and the birth of Sundog Tailoring.
Looking to the future, Jessica and Derek plan to expand Sundog Tailoring into a line of ready-to-wear, limited-edition collections. These pieces will feature carefully sourced, high-quality materials, with limited runs to ensure exclusivity. Their vision is to offer garments that not only cater to those who appreciate exceptional craftsmanship but also to the broader public seeking timeless, well-made clothing.
Our work
Sundog Tailoring is a comprehensive production workroom with facilities in Downtown Los Angeles, CA, and Livingston, MT. We specialize in custom garment creation for television and film, including development, pattern making, and full-service cutter/fitter work. Our team is skilled in both historically accurate vintage Western sewing techniques and contemporary methods. Additionally, we offer alteration and tailoring services for on-set production as well as private fittings and alteration services at both locations. Jessica Louise is a proud member of IATSE Local 705 and Local 488.

With over 20 years of experience in production sewing and the apparel industry, Both Derek and I are highly skilled and versatile professionals. Jessica Louise is a certified tailor and an expert in couture sewing. My classical training, combined with extensive hands-on experience, enables me to deliver high-quality craftsmanship in a fast-paced environment.
We excel in collaborative settings and adapt seamlessly to new work environments. We are able to easily integrate with diverse teams, adjusting to various personalities and communication styles to contribute effectively. Our strong interpersonal skills, coupled with a solution-oriented mindset, allow us to consistently meet deadlines and perform well under pressure.
As dependable team members, we work closely with department heads, actively contributing to project planning and problem-solving. Our ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and maintain attention to detail makes us a valuable asset to any team.
